God Hates Lies – A Call to Truthfulness.
Why Does God Hate Lying?
Proverbs 6:16–19 lists seven things the Lord hates and lying appears twice:
“A lying tongue,”
“A false witness who pours out lies.”
This repetition is no accident—it reveals how seriously God views falsehood. Lying is not just a sin among many; it is a core offense that undermines God’s very nature. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” To follow Christ is to follow Truth itself. Conversely, in John 8:44, Jesus declared that the devil is “a liar and the father of lies.” To lie is not just to tell a falsehood—it is to align oneself with Satan’s character, not God’s.
Satan’s first rebellion in heaven was steeped in deceit, and he led a third of the angels into rebellion by sowing discord—exactly what God condemns in Proverbs 6. The same spirit of deception that brought down heaven’s harmony continues to plague the earth.
The Definition and Gravity of a Lie:
Lying involves four essential elements:
- A statement is made.
- The speaker knows it to be false.
- It is told to others.
- It is intended to be believed as truth.
If all four elements are present, deception has taken root.
Lies often wear many disguises:
- Gossip and backbiting
- Flattery
- Exaggeration
- Silence in the face of falsehood
These subtle shades of deception are just as destructive.
Let us take a look at the recent case involving deception in High Place reported in the media and social platform across the nation. Recent media coverage of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal illustrates the deep moral decay in leadership. Despite extensive photographic, video, and testimonial evidence of a close association between Epstein and a prominent political figure (the 47th U.S. president), public denial followed.
This brings to mind Peter’s denial of Jesus—except unlike Peter, who later repented bitterly, the denier in this case shows no remorse. Instead, his repeated denials seek to rewrite the truth and manipulate public perception.
What’s the danger? When lies are accepted as truth by loyal followers, truth dies, and society suffers. When deception spreads unchecked, it distorts justice, corrupts institutions, and leads entire nations astray.
The biblical consequence of lying in the Scripture is unambiguous:
“All liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone.” – Revelation 21:8
Lying is not a minor flaw—it is a soul-condemning sin when practiced unrepentantly. It finds its place alongside the most grievous offenses because it reflects the very nature of Satan, not Christ. Moreover, Matthew 7:17–23 reminds us that only good trees bear good fruit. Those who claim to follow Christ but live in deceit cannot be counted among God’s true chosen ones. Jesus warns that false prophets and hypocrites will be cast into the fire—cut off from the Kingdom.
Awake, O people of the most high God. Let us not slumber in spiritual apathy or be seduced by the theatrics of evil masquerading as leadership. We must not become color-blinded to deception just because it aligns with our politics or preferences. God’s chosen people are called to:
Pursue truth at all costs.
Refuse to normalize deceit.
Hold leaders and ourselves accountable to God’s standards.
To be chosen by God is not a political label—it is a call to bear His image in the world, especially in the way we uphold truth. We must stand with Christ, even if the world mocks us for doing so. “Choose this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15
In conclusion, the road of Truth is narrow, difficult to tread on if you chose to walk on your own strength. Receive helps from the one who have overcome the world, always willing to reach out His nail wounded hands for our assistance.
God hates lies because He is Truth. Every lie opposes His character and disrupts the harmony He created. As followers of Christ, we are not just called to believe the truth, but to live it—even when it’s hard, unpopular, or costly. Let us examine our lives, our speech, and even the public figures we support. Let us repent of any complicity with lies, and walk in the light of God’s truth. Only those who love the truth can be counted among God’s chosen.
“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire.
He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44
