Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of eternal life that you were called to and have made a good confession about in the presence of many witnesses as written by Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 6:12. Here, Apostle Paul beseeched us to fight the good fight as I would paraphrase as to fight like hell for our faith all the way to the end, until we die or Christ is revealed from heaven.
This call to fight like hell is not a passive figurative rhetoric but an actual call to action. If we are to do well we must put on the full armour of God in order to fight well. We must fight vigorously and earnestly in all our spiritual and physical battle in pursuit of righteousness and godliness. We must daily be on an alert state of mind as the enemy is a cunning lion that seek to devour us if we lack commitment. We fight today and then tomorrow and then the next day. Without a doubt, we will still get knocked down but we get back up with the help of the Holy Spirit and keep on fighting. As in the literature book entitled, Pilgrims Progress, our attitude should be like Christian in his journey towards Celestial City. Despites the arduous journey, fraught with numerous trials and temptations, many setbacks, rather than whine or complain, he picked himself up, endeavor to finish his race, with this thought that though he may fall but he always rise up to fight again.
To fight the good fight of faith should not be mistaken for working for your salvation. The former urges us to contend for the righteousness as we rested in Christ, the latter demand that we work tirelessly by fulfilling the demands of the law. Christ has died on the cross to set us free from the clutches of laws; therefore, we do not entangle ourselves with the burdens of the laws as Apostle Paul’s epistle to the people of Galatia. Galatia in the early 53 or 54 CE, new believers were confused and misled by Jewish Christians that they were beholden to the Law of Moses. Apostle Paul disputed and refuted these claims by the Jewish Christians to place a yoke of burden to the newly converted gentiles.
In our time where the return of Christ is imminent, the chaos and confusion to our faith will get more intense. We will need the help of God, The Holy Spirit, to help us through our struggle and trials just like the main character, Christian, in the literature of Pilgrim Progress. So, we must fight like hell towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Why? Because, Eternity matters!
