What a Friend We Have in Jesus?
The question may sound like a line from a hymn, but it is far more than that. It’s a profound spiritual reality and a personal invitation. What kind of friend is Jesus? The Bible provides an emphatic answer.
In John 15:13–15, Jesus says: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends… I no longer call you servants… instead, I have called you friends, and for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
In these verses, Jesus draws us into His heart. We are not just followers or servants—we are His friends, loved so deeply that He would give His life to save ours.
A Friendship That Shook the Earth
John, one of the disciples who heard these words firsthand, would later witness the terrifying and glorious fulfillment of this promise. On the cross, Jesus died for His friends. And when He died, even the natural world convulsed: the earth quaked, rocks split, tombs opened, and the curtain in the temple tore in two (Matthew 27:51–54). All of creation seemed to mourn as the Son of God, the Friend of sinners, gave His life.
That, indeed, is the ultimate act of friendship—not one of empty promises, betrayal, denial but of infinite sacrifice. What a friend we have in Jesus!
He Didn’t Leave Us Alone
Even as He prepared to return to the Father, Jesus didn’t abandon His friends. He promised another Helper—the Holy Spirit, the Comforter who would come after His ascension. Just like a faithful friend would not leave without saying goodbye or leaving support behind, Jesus made sure His followers would never be alone.
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” – John 14:18
He is preparing a place for His bride—the Church—while the Holy Spirit comforts, guides, and empowers us until He returns. What friend does that? Only Jesus will! Jesus Christ who is our Bridegroom, Savior, and truest companion in this sojourn and to eternity.
Broken Friendships in a Broken World
In contrast, human friendships can be fickle, even toxic. Sadly, we’ve all seen relationships that began in closeness, perhaps, for decades but ended in betrayal or destruction. Recent headlines and social media stories have put the spotlight on once-powerful alliances of public figures—now shattered, exposed, and tainted. In one tragic case, a decades-long friendship ended in disgrace, incarceration and eventually, death for one party, denial and lies for the other. Toxic friendship brings out the worst in both individuals.
There’s a sobering reminder in Proverbs 13:20: “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
We often say, “A best friend is someone who brings out the best in you.” But in many cases, the reverse is sadly true. The wrong friendships can corrupt character, compromise convictions, and lead us into darkness.
A Hymn of Hope
There’s a reason why the old hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” still stirs the soul. It speaks truth—gently, yet powerfully:
What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
This is not sentimentality. This is reality. Jesus is the friend who knows your flaws and still loves you. He won’t turn away when you’re burdened, broken, or betrayed.
