The most intriguing and mystifying knowledge of the Godhead, has to be the second members of the Trinity, our Lord Jesus Christ. HE certainly is God; He was with God the Father in the beginning of creation, as evidently recorded in the conversation exchanges between the members of the Godhead.
In the Old Testament, HE clearly was present with the Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and then, the Israelites, as they traversed the vast span of the land of Canaan. All of HIS appearances at those points in history were documented faithfully by the authors of the Old Testament. Gen. 16:7-14; 21:17-18; 22:11-18; 31:11-13; Exod. 3:2; Judg. 2:1-4; 5:23; 6:11-22; 13:3-22; 2 Sam. 24:16; Zech. 1:12; 3:1; 12:8).” Based on these verses and other depictions of the Angel of Jehovah in the Old Testament, it is quite apparent that the entity mentioned was the second Person of the Trinity.
So then, we are tempted to wonder why the Almighty One, in all greatness and power, not forgetting supreme authority that comes with the role of being a Deity, chose to be a mere mortal subjected to all the infirmities and vulnerabilities that brought about through the fall of Adam. In every respect, HE had been tempted as we are, being a righteous God embodied and subjugated by flesh, yet without sin. Donald McLeod develops this theory of the pre-incarnate Christ, “he possessed all the majesty of deity, performed all its functions and enjoyed all its prerogatives…He was invulnerable to pain, frustration, and embarrassment. He existed in unclouded serenity. His supremacy was total, his satisfaction complete, and his blessedness perfect.” So, why would anyone, let alone Jesus Christ, in his right thought and sense of mind, bathed in glory, pomp and splendour, decided to forsake all to become a weak human. For what reason would suffice such great sacrifice. In John 3:16, it was stated endearingly that God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. So, Love was the motive and eternal salvation for all believing persons was the reason. This fact is irrefutable and proven beyond all reasonable doubts in the Holy Bible. Therefore, as a son, an obedient one, He came into this wretched world, to be birthed by a woman, subjected Himself to the frailties of humanity because of His Father’s will and love for us. In John 6:38, we read that Jesus emphatically said that He came only to do His Father’s will, not His own. What an act of obedience, what an ultimate demonstration of submission, despites the knowledge of the hefty cost for His action to be the perfect Lamb of God.
Was Jesus Christ becoming the Lamb of God the only reason that He came? I am inclined to think otherwise. Were there any other reasons behind that primary motive of eternal salvation of the souls of mankind? Yes! Indeed!
On many occasions Jesus Christ in the form of a human person displayed human feelings. Only as a human can He relates to the pain and suffering of another human being. He wept at the news of the passing of Lazarus, was enraged with anger at the commercialisation of the place of worship, felt the pang of hunger when HE reaches to the absence of offering from the fig tree. HE pitied the widow who lost a son. HE touched the leprous person who came to Him for healing. On this instance, we can derive and deduce the essence of HIS profound wisdom to be subjected to humanity. As God and an extra-terrestrial being, HE can still perform the same miracles with awes, but what HE did as a human God was beyond human comprehension. HE created us. So, HE knew that us, as human will need the human touch. It would be more therapeutic than just receiving the splendour and grandiose of the miracle performed by God.
Obviously, HE knew that the leper emotional healing is equally important to the physical healing of the body. The leper devoid of human interactions most of his life, felt the human warmth and touch when His Majesty, a person, instead of an extra-terrestrial being or the Lord of the whole universe, touches him. If God were to appear to the leper in His deified form and healed him, the healed person would have only received an incomplete healing. Perhaps, that explained why our God had to sacrifice Himself, born of woman to become a human being so that HE can empathise with us on our mortal sufferings. Hebrews 2:17 mentioned distinctively, I quote, “ Therefore, HE had to be made like His brothers in every aspect, so that HE might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” unquote. That was His Purpose driven life.
